Lundbreck Falls Provincial Park
About 7 minutes from my home in Cowley and about 5 minutes drive from the Hamlet of Lundbreck is Lundbreck Falls Provincial Park. The park is named for a 12 meter/39 foot drop on the Crowsnest River. Lundbreck falls is super easy to get to, located just a kilometre off of Highway 3 about half way between the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.
Quick Stop at Lundbreck Falls
Just a 1km detour off of Highway 3 takes you to a scenic lookout over the falls. It’s a perfect spot to get out and stretch your legs and let the kids burn around. There are well defined trails starting from parking lots on either side of the falls that lead you right to the river to do some exploring.
Public restrooms are available here and a few picnic tables to have a snack overlooking the falls.
Day trip to Lundbreck Falls
This provincial park makes spending a day outside easy. Pack a picnic lunch or have a cookout at one of the day use sites that sit along the Crowsnest River at the campground.
Walking the paths along the river is a perfect way to get to know the park. My kids can spend hours entertaining themselves along the river looking for bugs, climbing trees, getting wet and muddy, and throwing rocks in the river.
Camping at Lundbreck Falls
This Provincial Park and campground is a favourite for campers. It is a super convenient location to spend a few days exploring the area or for Anglers keen to chase the famous Crowsnest river Rainbow trout.
There are serviced/powered sites $36, unserviced and walk-in tent sites $28. The Campsite fills up quickly in the summer season so booking ahead is essential.
Fishing at Lundbreck Falls
I’m a dyed in the wool Fly Angler so our family outings almost always happen near a body of water be it a lake or river.
I gauge every location by the fishing it provides. The Crowsnest river is one of the most recognizable rivers in this corner of Alberta.
The Crow is a super productive stream with really great hatches and good trout populations. Anglers of all skill levels have a chance at catching Rainbow, Brown and Cutthroat trout, as well as Whitefish and Bull Trout.
The park sits right on the banks of the river and provides access to productive fishing both up and downstream.
My family doesn’t necessarily share my passion for fishing and they need something to do while I’m on the river.
I always try to choose spots that have walking paths and other good stuff like playgrounds so everyone enjoys the day.
Hiking/Walking at Lundbreck Falls
There are good paths starting at the Falls lookout parking lots that lead to the river and along it’s length.
These are walking trails suitable for all fitness levels.
If you’re looking for a longer or more aggressive hike, there are other spots in the area to fit the bill like Table Mountain trail at Beaver Lake or Turtle Mountain trail in Blairmore.
Paddling at Lundbreck Falls
I know of kayak paddlers who have dropped Lundbreck Falls but these are very skilled, high level paddlers. This is not a drop for the average recreational paddler.
The day use parking lot at the campground is a great spot to put in your canoe or kayak and paddle downstream.
This is Class 2 stretch of river with only a few small rapids and obstacles. Paddlers can take out at either the Range Road 21a bridge, a short 3km trip or extend it to Todd Creek Rec Area which is 7.5km paddle.
The Hamlet of Lundbreck
If you say the name Lundbreck to most folks in Alberta they’ll at least have heard of Lundbreck Falls and for good reason.
It’s an easy place to access and have a memorable time whether you’re spending several days or only an hour.
It’s worth noting too that just up the road in the Hamlet of Lundbreck is our humble brewery and taproom, Oldman River Brewing.
Nothing goes better with a day at the river than a pint of fresh craft beer in a laid back brew pub. Just sayin’.
So stop in for a beer and a bite to eat. Lundbreck is also home to Obie’s gas station and convenience store, to fuel up for the rest of your trip and a gift shop right across the street from the brewery.
We hope to see you here.
Happy Road Tripping!
Cheers,
Adam
